- Material(books, audiovisual material, and other material) owned by the
Kyoto City Library can be read and viewed by anyone free of charge.
- You need a library card to borrow material. Cards issued by the Kyoto City
Library can be used in all 19 branches of the Kyoto City Library.
- If you do not have a library card, follow the procedure at your nearest
Kyoto City Library to obtain a card. Library cards can only be issued to
people who are resident in Kyoto City, or who commute to Kyoto for work
or to attend school. The Kyoto City Library can only issue one card per
person. Please fill out the required "Individual Lending Registration
Application" and present it at the counter along with confirmation
of your name and address. For people living in the suburbs, please also
present confirmation of your place of work or school address in Kyoto city.
■Borrowing and Returning
- To borrow material, please present the material together with your library
card at the counter.
- Each individual can borrow up to 10 items (2 items for audiovisual materials)
for up to 2 weeks from any Kyoto City Library.
- To extend the borrowing period, please return the material and present
your library card at the counter of your nearest Kyoto City Library within
the borrowing period. Please restrict your renewals to once per item. You
cannot extend the borrowing period for audiovisual material or material
that has been reserved by another member. You cannot extend the borrowing
period by telephone, fax, or email.
- To return material, simply bring the material to the counter of your nearest
Kyoto City Library. (Library card not necessary) When the library is closed,
simply place the book in the return post. For audiovisual material, please
return them to the counter of the library from which you rented them.
■Searching for material
- You can search all of the material held in Kyoto City Libraries from the
material search machine (OPAC) in the building.
- If the material is not available on the bookshelf, please fill in the necessary
details on the "Reservation and Request Card" and present the
card at the counter. If the material is already out on loan, we will contact
you as soon as it is returned.
- You can search and reserve material by Internet, OPAC, and cell phone.
However, to do this you need a special password, so please apply at the
counter beforehand.
- If we do not have the material you are looking for, we will consider making
a purchase. Also, it may be possible to borrow from libraries outside of
Kyoto City.
- Please try to limit your reservations and requests to 10 per person.

- Material in the library can be copied within the scope of Copyright Laws.
